Lived Experience Kōrero

Changing Minds recently asked our lived experience community to share their thoughts or experiences of the Mental Health Act in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our deepest gratitude to everyone who shared their story as part of this project.

Our hope is this video will inform, educate and inspire others to contribute to the future of mental healthcare in Aotearoa. The Ministry of Health is consulting on a public discussion document which builds on the findings of He Ara Oranga, which recommended the repeal and replacement of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992. We encourage all Tāngata Mātau ā-wheako – people with personal experience of mental distress and/or addiction, and their families and whānau to have their say before 28 January 2022.

Changing Minds welcomes contributions to our advocacy on this issue from those with lived experience of mental distress and/or addiction in Aotearoa, or those who have supported friends and whānau on their journey.

Anyone who wishes to make a submission directly to the Ministry of Health can do so via this link before 28 January 2022.
