recoVRy Virtual Reality film

recoVRy uses virtual reality (VR) technology to create a simple, safe, and effective way to understand the experience of people who have recovered from serious mental health and addiction problems.

How does it work?

This is a short interactive film featuring real stories from real people about thriving through mental health and addiction challenges. While watching, you can also virtually interact with the storyteller and collect tools as you watch, to support yourself or others on their recovery journey.

What will I see?

Mockingbird is a maternal mental health story, originally developed as a theatre play. It aims to build awareness and capture the experience of what it was like for women admitted into mental health facilities with a diagnosis of psychosis or mania across four generations.

Watch and learn about the good and the bad of pre, post and peri-natal mental healthcare from over more than a century.

Mockingbird demonstrates why clinicians need to develop women and family-centred care for optimal health outcomes. It also shows how the lack or the presence of a supportive community influences, negatively or positively, the individual’s chances of recovery. It is the first of what we hope will be many more stories we tell about experiences of mental healthcare in Aotearoa.
