Mapping the Wellbeing System
How do Government systems affect our wellbeing?
-
This project explores “what actually is the mental wellbeing system in Aotearoa?”
Wellbeing is more than just accessing health services, and this research will explore and visualise how people access and experience government systems for their wellbeing.
Changing Minds are leading this mahi on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
-
In short, any system experience that has had a positive or negative impact on your wellbeing.
This mahi acknowledges and shines a light on all of the social determinants of our wellbeing.
This will look different for everyone! The following list is just an example but might include:
Experiences of health services, like visiting a GP, hospital, specialist mental health services.
Experiences of being under the Mental Health Act or compulsory treatment, including Survivors of Abuse in State Care.
Experiences of houselessness/homelessness.
Experiences of the Justice System, police or incarceration.
Experiences of social services and disability services.
-
Over the next 12 months we will be looking for between 100 – 120 people who have experiences of wellbeing systems to talk about their experiences.
These will be approximately 90-minute-long interviews.
NZSL interpreters will be available.
Interviews will be online, however in-person interviews may be possible on request.
You will be paid for your time for the interviews.

Lived Experience and Community Led
-
Changing Minds is proudly led by and for Tāngata Mātau ā-wheako, people who have their own experiences of mental distress, addiction or substance use. As Kaitiaki of this project we bring our own experiences and insights, as well as Lived Experience community knowledge gained over the past 25 years. Through listening to community, we have developed Lived Experience led approaches to kōrero and insights and are committed to inclusion, transparency and accountability.
But we can’t do this alone! As well as being Lived Experience focused, it’s important that a wide range of communities and intersections of our experiences are represented and can contribute to the design of this mahi.
-
We are calling for expressions of interest shortly for individuals or groups who have strong ties to, are leaders in, or represent different community networks, to form our Lived Experience Community Networks Advisory Group. This group will inform the design of questions, interview approaches and analysis as well as connecting in with their networks of community.
-
Changing Minds is passionate about empowering our community to develop their skills and expertise and to be leaders in research about us. We will be training and supporting Tāngata Whaiora to be interviewers for this research, and to act as “coders” on the research team.
It’s also important that communities have the opportunity to discuss, understand and reshape developing knowledge so feedback loops and focus groups are planned throughout the project.
-
Finally, while this mahi will inform the Ministry of Health and government’s work, our reports and outputs will be available to communities to lead their own wellbeing navigation, sense making and learning.
