  • He Awa Hou Easy-to-Use Guide for Peer Support in Gambling Harm

This guide was created to support peer kaimahi, Lived Experience workers, and services walking alongside tangata whaiora, whānau, aiga, and communities affected by gambling harm. It sits alongside He Awa Hou – A New River, the peer support framework co-designed with Lived Experience, providers, cultural partners, and community voices across Aotearoa.

The purpose of this guide is simple: to turn the wisdom of the framework into practical, everyday tools. It offers clear steps, values, and approaches that reflect what people told us they need:

    • Compassion over pressure

    • Cultural safety over assumptions

    • Partnership over hierarchy

    • Empowerment over control

This is not a clinical manual. It is a hands-on companion grounded in Lived Experience, cultural knowledge, and the understanding that healing is a collective journey, for all who support. Use this guide to:

    • Build confidence in your role

    • Navigate boundaries and safe practice

    • Strengthen partnerships with clinical and cultural teams

    • Support harm reduction in real-life situations

    • Look after your own wellbeing through reflective practice

    • Stay connected to the values of He Awa Hou

As the river flows, this guide will evolve. Your insights, your stories, and your learning will continue to shape it. He Awa Hou, a new river, is carried by all of us.
